THORNTON | The Village Board voted unanimously last week to create an ordinance which freezes the property tax levy for the upcoming year.

The board is expected to approve the ordinance at its meeting Monday.

"The total levy, including the Library Board's portion of the levy, is $1,996,986," Village Administrator Jason Wicha said.

Last year, the board voted to increase the village's property tax levy by 1.88 percent, Wicha said.

"Due to the continued cost-saving measures that have been implemented by the Village Board and by staff, forecasted revenues are expected to match our anticipated expenditures next year, absent any additional revenue," Wicha said.

Trustee Kim Atkinson called the ordinance that would result in no increase in property taxes "a great thing."

She said the levy freeze has been made possible in part because of a new contract between the village and the company that owns the Thornton quarry that she said will result in an additional $100,000 for the village this year.

Atkinson also said the village will see additional revenue as a result of its decision to allow the operation of an electronic billboard on the east side of the quarry.

"We found other sources of income," Atkinson said.

In other village news:

* The board unanimously approved renewing the village's general insurance coverage for 2013 at a cost of $148,196.20.

The board had appropriated $150,000 for the expense in its current budget.

"It's about a 10 percent increase, which is pretty customary in terms of what we're seeing every year," Wicha said.

* The board also voted to allow the Thornton Historical Society to use Hubbard Park from 10 am to 1 pm on Sunday in conjunction with its Holiday Happenings Festival.

The use of the park was requested for a dog sledding presentation.
