UNIVERSITY PARK |  Rehearsals are under way for “HAIR,” the 2013 production of the Southland Theatre Ensemble at Governors State University. A total of 35 cast members were chosen following recent auditions. The cast and crew come from 22 communities, mostly in Chicago’s Southland.

Performance dates are July 27 and 28, and Aug. 3 and 4 at the Center for Performing Arts.

“HAIR,” first presented in 1967 as “the American Tribal Love Rock Musical,” is a monumental work of theater. It tells the story of a group of Vietnam-era Americans exuberantly creating their own rite of passage amid the confusion happening in the world around them. The musical reflected the bell-bottomed, tie-dyed spirit of the 1960s, and includes unforgettable songs like “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine In,” and “Good Morning Starshine.”

SLATE was established in 2009 as an artistic collaboration between the Center for Performing Arts, local theater educators, and veterans of area community theater companies. SLATE has produced four critically acclaimed summer productions, “Into the Woods” in 2009, “The Wedding Singer” in 2010, “Ragtime” in 2011, and ”Legally Blonde: The Musical,” in 2012.

Tickets go on sale July 1 at the Center for Performing Arts box office. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Center’s website at or by calling the box office at (708) 235-2222.

Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway. For more information about SLATE, visit
