UNIVERSITY PARK | The Governors State University Visual Arts Gallery presents So Real, a show featuring artwork by three painters who exploit realism for their own purposes.

The exhibition, with paintings by Anthony Adcock, Amanda Grieve and Renee McGinnis, runs from Wednesday to Aug. 30. A closing reception will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29. The show and reception are free and open to the public.

According to gallery director Jeff Stevenson, So Real is an exhibition of contemporary paintings that explore current cultural topics using traditional, time-tested techniques and materials. The show is curated by Susan Aurinko.

Adcock received his bachelor of fine arts degree with a specialization in oil painting from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He also studied painting and drawing at the Vitruvian School of Art in Chicago and has spent time studying plein air painting in Italy.

Adcock says of his own work, “I look at perception as a variable that is subject to change. I use trompe l’oeil as a playful means to share my perceptions of reality with my viewers.”

Amanda Grieve graduated with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2008. She is a juried member of the Chicago Artist’s Coalition’s HATCH project for 2011-12 and has had solo shows at the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, Lincoln Land Community College and the Buchanan Center for the Arts.

Renee McGinnis grew up on a farm in central Illinois and attended Illinois Wesleyan University, earning a BFA in 1984. She continued with graduate work in sociology and anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited widely in Chicago and has also been shown in Germany, Australia, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
