UNIVERSITY PARK | How do you solve a problem like Maria?
You’ll find out when “Sing-A-Long Sound of Music” brings an afternoon of participatory fun for the whole family at 2 p.m. March 9 to Governors State University Center for Performing Arts, 1 University Parkway.
The beloved 1965 film, winner of multiple Oscars and based on the real-life story of Austria’s Von Trapp family, will be shown in all its big-screen, Technicolor glory at GSU Center, with subtitles for lyrics and dialogue that you can follow throughout the entire show.
As for that problem called Maria. If you like, you can dress up like Maria, the plucky heroine played onscreen by Julie Andrews. You can cheer her on as she finds true love and outsmarts the bad guys. You can sing along as she performs some of the best known of all show tunes – “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Edelweiss,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “The Sound of Music,” and many more.
“Sing-A-Long Sound of Music” is all about audience participation. With each paid admission, audience members get a fun pack, filled with props. If you have a favorite character, come dressed for the part. At previous “Sing-A-Long Sound of Music” showings, participants have brought – or worn – brown paper packages, tied up with string. It’s not uncommon to find little girls in party clothes, people with snow on their nose and eyelashes, and men and women dressed as fully-wimpled nuns.
“Sing-A-Long Sound of Music” revivals began in London in 1999, with a successful run in New York beginning the next year. Since then, the show – and concept – has been something of a world-wide phenomenon. Each year, a “Sing-A-Long Sound of Music” draws more than 18,000 people to Hollywood Bowl.

The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and two hours prior to performances. Student discounts are only available by phone or in person and require a valid school ID.
