UNIVERSITY PARK | Follow the Yellow Brick Road to this summer’s Musical Theatre Camp at Governors State University Center for Performing Arts.

This year’s camp, from June 17 to 21, takes it inspiration from “The Wizard of Oz” as young participants learn classic songs like “Over the Rainbow” and valuable theater skills.

Campers develop a mini-musical based on “The Wizard of Oz” and perform a one-time-only production at the Center for Performing Arts at 7 p.m. June 21.

During the camp, students will learn songs, choreography, and scenes from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Wiz,” and “Wicked.” Professional coaches will work with campers on scene study, voice, diction, improvisation, singing, and dancing.

Musical Theatre Camp is open to children ages 7 to 13. Camp takes place six hours each day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $250 for the week; the price of the camp also includes four tickets for the Friday night performance. Additional tickets for the performance are $10. To reserve a spot at Musical Theatre Camp, call the box office at (708) 235-2222.

This year’s camp will again be conducted by Emerald City Theatre, a Chicago-based nonprofit theater organization dedicated to producing family theater experiences that serve as a child’s gateway to the arts and prepare them for a world of opportunities. Emerald City Theatre conducted its first Musical Theatre Camp at GSU in 2010.

“We are happy to partner once again with Emerald City Theatre to offer an exciting week of hands-on theater training, friendship-building, and fun for our community,” said Lana Rogachevskaya, executive director of the Center for Performing Arts.

The Center for Performing Arts is dedicated to presenting the finest in performing arts entertainment and education in Chicago’s greater metropolitan area and the south suburbs. GSU Center features a 1,200-seat, state of the art facility for world-class fine arts presentations and theatrical productions.

The GSU Center for Performing Arts is located at 1 University Parkway. For more information about Musical Theatre Camp or GSU Center, call (708) 235-2222 or visit www.centertickets.net.
