High winds this afternoon could create dangerous conditions for people operating small watercraft on Lake Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts of up to 30 mph were expected Wednesday afternoon. A high temperature in the low 70's was predicted.

A small craft advisory along the Lake Michigan shore in Indiana, Illinois and southwest Michigan was in effect from 9 a.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday.

High winds could cause waves of up to 5 feet that make navigating difficult for small vessels, forecasters said.
