Re-opening | Calumet City

Society meets | Homewood
Homewood Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the lower level of St. Paul Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway. Following the meeting and a refreshment break, Helen Ehlebracht will discuss the history of Nielsen's Bakery in Homewood, as well as the background of the Nielsen and Ehlebracht families. Small business | Dolton
The Dolton Public Library will host a series of four sessions on starting a small business, to be presented by Vicki Brooks of the University of Illinois Extension. The series will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 and continue through Oct. 29. These workshops are designed to help participants understand what is involved in starting a business, what it takes to be successful, and how to actually get started. Each session includes an interactive presentation followed by a question and answer period. Register.

Polish pastries | Chicago
The Hegewisch branch of the Chicago Public Library will have a program titled Polish Pastries with Oak Mill Bakery from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at 3048 E. 130th St. It's part of Polish-American Heritage Month. Bogna Solak of the Oak Mill Bakery will demonstrate the art of Polish style pastry. A tasting will follow the program. Register.

Heritage day | Calumet City
The city will host Polish-American Heritage Day celebration Oct. 5. A wreath will be laid at 10 a.m. in Pulaski Park, across the street from City Hall, 204 Pulaski Road, and an 11:15 a.m. service is planned at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 768 Lincoln Ave. The church's Polish choir will perform.
A buffet lunch follows in the school gym. Lunch costs $12 for advance tickets, available by phone or at the rectory, and $15 at the door. Tickets for the dance only cost $5 at the door.

Lansing Presbyterian Church holds Shop and Share Days Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at all Jewel-Osco stores. By shopping at Jewel on one of those days, 5 percent of the purchase will be given to the store to the church for missions.

Pet blessing | Griffith
St. Mary Church, 525 N. Broad St., will host its 29th annual Feast of St. Francis Pet Blessing and pet food and supply drive at noon Oct. 4 in the church courtyard. They will accept pet food and supplies such as unflavored dog biscuits, large absorbent cloth towels, laundry detergent, bleach, nonclumping cat litter, plastic litter pans and monetary donations. All donations go to the Humane Society Calumet Area and Griffith Animal Shelter. Everyone and their pet are invited to come to the blessing. All pets must be on a leash.

Highland Parks and Recreation Department's 2008 arts and craft show with vendor fair is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St. Handmade items as well as products from direct sales will be available. The winter show is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 29 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30. Returning arts and crafts vendors must register with payment for the winter show by Oct. 30 or the space will be given to another vendor. New vendors may sign up after Oct. 30.

Harvest Gala | Schererville
The St. Thomas More Home and School Association will have its 2008 annual Harvest Gala Oct. 25 at the Halls of St. George, 905 E. Joliet St. The evening will feature bar, dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions and raffles. Auction items include Bulls tickets, Bears tickets, a year's worth of pedicures and a chance to take home the 1953 Heisman Trophy awarded to Johnny Lattner for a week. FAMILY SUPPORT | Hammond
CAMEO, an educational support group for family caregivers to the elderly, meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Purdue University Calumet Entrepreneurship Center, 1247 E. 169th St. This session will feature a discussion of family stress. CAMEO has been offering support to those caring for elderly loved ones since 1982. The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.

FLOOD RELIEF | Lake County
Lake County Salvation Army has provided assistance to more than 5,682 flood victims within the past several weeks. The total cost has been $450,000. The Salvation Army continues to feed and hydrate residents and emergency workers throughout flood-affected areas at three fixed feeding sites and with five mobile canteens traveling through the neighborhoods.
