The remnants of Hurricane Isaac lost steam on the way to the region, bringing rain but not the severe weather and flash flooding that was feared.

"It's basically spinning itself out right now," said David Beachler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill.

Beachler made the observation Saturday night as rain fell intermittently on Northwest Indiana and Chicago's south suburbs. Heavier storms fell on central Illinois.

"It appears as though the system is progressing a little bit farther south than model guides had suggested several days ago," Beachler said. "We're probably in the clear."

He said showers are forecast for the middle of the day today, but they are not anticipated to be severe.

That was good news for Dan Repay, executive director of the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission.

Repay said the Little Calumet River was nowhere near a level of concern as of Saturday night.

Repay was among a group of community leaders that met Thursday and planned for possible severe weather brought on by Hurricane Isaac.
