DE MOTTE | Thirteen is a very lucky number for several local organizations that received grants this month from the DeMotte Womens’ Circle of Giving.

"There are 13 of us. We put our own money in a fund, which goes through the Jasper Foundation," explained donor Charlotte Fagen. "Once a year, we give the money away to nonprofit organizations.

The recipients were invited to Fairchild House on Oct. 9 for refreshments, and a short presentation about DeMotte Womens’ Circle of Giving before the checks were distributed. This year the 13 members had $3,500 to award, and chose to support the DeMotte Historical Society, Fairchild House, the DeMotte Chamber of Commerce, the KV Soccer League, the DeMotte Little League and two Girl Scout troops.

"Our Mission Statement is 'To improve the Town of DeMotte and make it a better place to live, learn and work through personal philanthropy and to celebrate the power of women,'" Fagen noted of the donor group, established in 2003. "We have given over $23,000 to DeMotte nonprofit groups."

"The Circle of Giving is comprised of like-minded individuals who pool their money to support causes that improve the quality of life in DeMotte. This is a way for individuals to meet needs which may be greater than they can address on their own," Fagen added.

DeMotte Historical Society will use $1,000 to buy new windows and doors for the depot, while Fairchild House will use its $500 grant for repairs on the historic Fairchild House. DeMotte Chamber of Commerce will spend its $500 grant for entertainment at the 2013 Touch of Dutch Festival.

Kankakee Valley Soccer League will use $550 for its Special Needs Program and equipment, while DeMotte Little League will spend its $500 to pour concrete under bleachers at its field and repair dugout benches. Girl Scout Troop 32404 received $250 to purchase food for the DeMotte Food Pantry while learning to use coupons and be thrifty. Girl Scout Troop 32430 received $100 to create breakfast bags for the food pantry.
