The National Weather Service is warning pockets of heavy snow could fall through the region this afternoon, causing visibilities of less than half a mile in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper and Benton counties through 4 p.m. Snow is expected to develop around midday and quickly end late in the afternoon.

Only some light snow and flurries are expected to linger into the evening.

Forecasters said accumulations will vary widely across the region, with no now at all in some areas and 1 or 2 inches in other areas. The greatest snowfall totals are expected in southern areas of the counties.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said just before noon that plows and salt trucks were already on state roadways pre-treating with de-icing agents in anticipation of the snow.

INDOT urged motorists to prepare for safe travels on New Year's eve. Between Dec. 23, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012, INDOT logged 176 collisions and one fatality.
