RENSSELAER | St. Joseph College is reporting its highest enrollment since 1971.

Figures for the new academic year show 371 total first-time students attending St. Joseph,  bringing the total to 1,163. College spokesmen said that is the highest total in 42 years.

This year's freshman class represents 16 states, with students from as far away as Oregon and Maryland.

The Biology Department welcomes the highest number of freshmen at 59, followed by Business Administration with 41.

St. Joseph College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by Princenton Review, is a four-year Catholic college offering 27 majors, four group majors, 35 minors and 9 pre-professional programs, completed by the Core Program.
