CROWN POINT | A contentious season of county budget requests has hardly begun and already someone has brought up the subject of "weapons of mass destruction."

Lake County officials, who begin public budget debates next week, already have announced they must reduce spending by $15 million because of revenue shortfalls caused by property tax cuts.

Nevertheless, the Lake County Fire Chief's Association is requesting a budget increase of $15,000.

The association performs several duties for the county, including disaster relief, handling hazardous material spills and sharing intelligence regarding terrorism with local law enforcement.

Michael Mantich, president of the association, wrote county officials earlier this month explaining the need for the additional money.

He said the association, which has not asked for a budget increase since 1999, is experiencing rising costs related to fuel, and vehicle and equipment maintenance.

He said the association also needs an increase "to remain compliant with Presidential Directive 8, which states that local hazmat teams must handle weapons of mass destruction incidents. Since Sept. 11, 2001, there have been and still are numerous responsibilities placed on our organization from the state and federal government."

Mantich couldn't be reached immediately Tuesday for further comment on the budget request.
