RECYCLING DRIVE | Gary

The Calumet Township trustee's office announces a recycling bin is open at 1900 W. 41st Ave. and another at 610 Connecticut St. Bins are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2009, the office recycled more than 26 tons of paper, according to a news release.

HEALTH & HEALING | Munster

Join Westminster Presbyterian Church for Anatomy of an Illness - a Health & Healing and Stephen Ministry Program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 3 in Room 209 at the church, 8955 Columbia Ave. Speaker Bunny Schlotman, M.S.N., therapist at The Samaritan Center, will share the story of how a patient joined his doctor to heal a devastating illness with unorthodox methods that included both physical and emotional components. The story was written by Norman Cousins, a journalist and unflagging optimist who believed in holistic treatment.

SOUP & SALAD SUPPER | Hammond

St. John Bosco Youth Group offers an all-you-can-eat soup and salad supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays during Lent beginning March 3 and continuing through March at the parish hall, 7111 Columbia Ave. Menu consists of soup, salad, bread and butter, crackers, dessert and beverage. At least three homemade soups will be offered, one will be a nonmeat soup. Price includes all soups and is $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Carry-outs available for $5, which includes one bowl of soup, bread and butter, salad and dessert. A Lenten Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent.

END-OF-LIFE ISSUES | Munster

Dr. David Casarett, a physician who has cared for hospice patients for 10 years, will discuss his latest book, "Last Acts," at a free public lecture from 2 to 4 p.m. March 9 at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. The event is sponsored by the Hospice of the Calumet Area, Caring Connections and the National Hospice Foundation. Sale of books will benefit the hospice. EMPLOYEE CARE | Munster

Notre Dame Club of Northwest Indiana will host its 2010 Hesburgh Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. March 3 at the Theater at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road.

This year's topic is "Ten Best Practices in Employee Care" and speaker Dr.

Charles Crowell of the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame will focus on keeping talent as well as motivating and nurturing employees to become high performers. After a one-hour talk, the speaker will entertain questions. Admission is free and open to all. RSVP.

GOOD GUT CHECK | Merrillville

Dr. Kumar Venkat will speak on how a colonoscopy for the early detection of colon cancer can save your life in a program at 5:30 p.m. March 3 in the Conference Room at Methodist Hospitals, Southlake Campus' Center for Advanced Clinical Studies, 200 E. 89th Ave. Individual colorectal cancer risk assessments will be available from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Colorectal cancer affects approximately 150,000 Americans each year, and is the nation's second leading cancer killer. However, it's 90 percent preventable and 90 percent treatable if detected early.

LENTEN SERIES | Highland

Mid-week Lenten Worship Series, "Word of Life from the Cross," based on the Lord’s seven last words from the cross, continues at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 24 through March 24, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9009 Kennedy Ave., followed by a coffee and fellowship hour. The services will be conducted by pastors, the Rev. Arthur Burkman and Rev. Eric Kleinschmidt, the Rev. Ron Saatkamp of Concordia Lutheran Church of Hammond, and the Rev. Karl Davies of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hammond, on a rotating basis. Visitors are welcome. Also, Maundy Thursday service, "The Remembering Word - Do This In Remembrance" will be held at 7 p.m. April 1, and Good Friday services, "The Fulfilled Word - It Is Finished" will be held at 7 p.m. April 2.

The Gary Public Library's senior citizens friendship club resumes monthly meetings at 1 p.m. March 3 at the Main Library, 220 W. Fifth Ave., second floor. The meetings will be held each Wednesday through May 19, featuring speakers and various activities for those 55 and older. Membership is free.

Register by March 5 to attend a free information and enrollment session for the Healthy Indiana Plan that takes place 10 a.m. March 6 at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St. The HIP is a low-payment medical plan for uninsured Hoosier adults between 19 and 64 years old with income twice that of the federal poverty level. Visit in.gov/fssa/hip for qualification guidelines. St. Catherine Hospital staff, state eligibility staff and insurance representatives will explain the plan and answer questions. Trained volunteers will assist with applications. To complete the application, bring identification, proof of income, citizenship and loans. Registration is required.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER | Highland

Church Women United of Greater Hammond will sponsor a World Day of Prayer service from noon to 2 p.m. March 5 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 2201 Azalea Drive. A fellowship tea will follow. This annual, worldwide ecumenical prayer service is observed in 170 countries beginning at sunrise in the Pacific and following the sun across the globe on the first Friday in March.
