BIRTHING HYPNOSIS | Crown Point
A childbirth preparation class will be presented by Rhea Vanderbok, practitioner and licensed hypnotherapist, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Focus is on reducing fear and decreasing the hormonal response that can cause labor complications. Schererville Central Lions Club will hold an Oktoberfest from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at the St. John Township Center, 1515 W. U.SD. 30. Gary Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. announces its Jabberwock 2010 Scholarship Ball: A Rose from Concrete. Jabberwock is a long tradition of the sorority that celebrates girls transitioning into women through promotion of positive self image, friendship, scholarship, and celebration of future potential. The Jabberwock journey is full of information, fun, and the making of memories that will last a lifetime. The chapter will host an Information Tea for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade and their parents at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Plaza. Members will provide details of how to be a participant, as well as all of the benefits to which participants are entitled.

YOUTH BASKETBALL | Hammond
Hammond Area YMCA will offer a fall Toddler & Youth Basketball session on Saturdays starting Nov. 7 and running through Dec. 19. Toddlers consist of ages 2 to 5 (must not be in kindergarten) and Youth consist of grades kindergarten through 6. Grades 2 to 6 will practice one day during the week. Basketball fundamentals, sportsmanship, team work and fun are taught and every child plays. Sessions will be held at the Hammond Area YMCA, 7322 Southeastern Ave.

Advance Financial Federal Credit Union's Better Than 50 Club will sponsor a one-day Christmas Shopping Trip at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 18 to Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall. Guests will board a chartered luxury bus at the credit union's Schererville branch office, 31 W. U.S. 30. Cost is $20 for club members and $25 for nonmembers for transportation, games and prizes and shopping for six hours. Lunch is up to the shoppers' discretion at the mall. A donor or donors is needed immediately to sponsor a team for the upcoming Inner-City Education Program Bowl. ICE is spear-headed by Chicago Blackhawk Brent Seabrook. It provides academic scholarships for low-income youth who participate in organized hockey and maintain satisfactory academic records. The total cost of the sponsorship is $2,000. If the donation is made in full the donor would receive name recognition in a program and on event signage. All donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.

The Salvation Army of Hammond/Munster Corps is accepting applications for the Christmas Assistance program from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through Nov. 13, at its office, 8225 Columbia Ave., Munster. Applicants must bring a current photo ID, proof of residency (lease, utility bill, mortgage payment receipt), proof of residents of home (photo IDS, Social Security cards) and proof of income. This service is provided for residents of Cedar Lake, Dyer, Griffith, Hammond, Highland, Lowell, Munster, St. John and Calumet City, Ill.

Tours of The Birth Place at St. Anthony Medical Center have been postponed until after the flu season. A date for resuming the tours will be set later. The tours are designed to familiarize families with The Birth Place in order to make their experiences more comfortable.

PENNIES FOR PAWS | Calumet Area
Humane Society Calumet Area seeks groups of up to 40 youngsters to compete in a penny war for its Pennies for Paws competition. Raise money through Dec. 19 and the winning group will get a pizza party, private shelter tour and animal play time. Youth groups and classes are encouraged to join in. All proceeds will go to care for the animals.

T-SHIRT SALES | Highland
Highland Select Centennial Committee is selling T-shirts commemorating the town's 2010 centennial. The shirts, all adult sizes, include the official centennial logo with an orange and fuchsia tulip. Colors available are black (with white printing), yellow, pistachio and serene green. Cost is $10 each. T-shirts are available at the Town Hall, 3333 Ridge Road.
