MATH BOWL | Crown Point

A Regional Math Academic Teams for Hoosiers competition will be hosted by Timothy Ball Elementary School at 5 p.m. March 11 at Col. John Wheeler Middle School, 401 W. Joliet St. Statewide, more than 5,500 students in grades 4 to 6 will compete on one of 445 teams at one of 38 sites. There are no individual winners, with four rounds of competition by three teammates working on seven math problems. A running score is kept and schools in four classifications compete for team honors. Spectators are welcome.

WRITERS CLUB | Hobart

Writers Expressions, a literary club, welcomes new or experienced writers 18 and older, and meets at 6:30 p.m. today and every other Thursday at Borders Booksellers in Westfield Southlake Mall on U.S. 30.  Writers are encouraged to bring poems, short stories, novels, and other creations to share with others. Critiques are offered.

SPAGHETTI DINNER | Hobart

A Workman family memorial dinner takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. today at John Meister Elementary School gymnasium, 3300 Jay St. A memorial service and mural dedication will be held immediately following the dinner. Dinner will include spaghetti, salad, and bread sticks. Desserts and drinks will be available. Children's meals for ages 3 to 5 cost $3. Adult advance tickets for the all-you-can-eat dinner are $5 or $6 at the door. All proceeds go toward the memorial mural.

NATURE CRAFTS | Hammond

Register by today for the Family Nature Crafts program hosted by the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department at 1 p.m. March 14 at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. The topic is "Wind" - try your hand at some wind experiments and make a wind chime to hang outside. Spend an afternoon with your family at Gibson Woods and learn something new about nature while making a craft project to enjoy at home. Fee is $2 per project. The April 11 topic is "Earth Day: Celebrate the earth and all its bounty." Make a recycled sculpture.

The Circle of Love Relay for Life team will host a Zumba fitness class from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 12 at MacArthur Elementary School, 12900 Fairbanks St. Cost is a $5 donation to the American Cancer Society. Instructor is certified fitness and Zumba instructor Shannon Hurst.

BUNCO FUNDRAISER | Dyer

Zion United Church of Christ will be sponsoring a Bunco Fundraiser at 7 p.m. March 12 at 14804 W. 113th Ave. Donation is $10 for this adults only event, with raffle tickets available for 50/50 and basket raffles. Arc BRIDGES invites everyone to Celebrate Disability Awareness 2010 by visiting during Family and Friends Day at one of the following Arc BRIDGES community locations: March 12 at the East Center, 2395 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart; March 17 at the North Center, 2660 W. 35th Ave., Gary; March 24 at the South Center, 550 E. Burrell Drive, Crown Point; and March 31, at 9600 Kennedy Ave., Highland. BIRD WATCHING | Hammond

Register by March 12 for a series of workshops on the fundamentals of bird-watching that will begin March 23 at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. The fee is $30 for six workshops that will meet weekly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. These workshops are designed for those unfamiliar with bird-watching as well as for experienced birdwatchers who want to brush up on their skills. Participants will learn how to identify birds, where the best locations are to see birds and when birds migrate to the area.  Workshops will also focus on types of birds often seen in the area such as songbirds, wading birds and birds of prey.  A field trip with an experienced bird-watcher is included. The workshops are a joint effort by the Dunes-Calumet Audubon Society and the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department.

BABY-SITTER COURSE | Schererville

Schererville Parks and Recreation Department will offer a two-day Baby-sitter Course for ages 11 to 15 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, March 13 and 20, in the Community Room at the Schererville Town Hall, 10 E. Joliet St. Cost is $40 for residents and $44 for nonresidents. Participants must complete both sessions to receive an American Red Cross certificate. FLOWER SHOW TRIP | Schererville

Schererville Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a trip to the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier on March 13. Coach bus will depart Rohrman Park at 8:30 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. Cost is $19 for residents and $21 for nonresidents. HEALTHY LEGS | Hobart

A "Healthy Legs" program will be held at 2 p.m. March 13 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St., in conjunction with Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness month. Dr. Luis Barajas of Decatur Vein Clinic in Hobart will discuss the more common and less serious conditions of venous insufficiency, including spider veins and varicose veins. He will perform a sample scan of a staff member's leg to demonstrate the simple diagnostic in-office mapping procedure that is normally conducted by medical providers. Refreshments will be provided. DONATE FOR A TREAT | Schererville

Culver’s of Schererville is offering a Give a Pint, Get a Pint certificate for a complimentary pint of frozen custard from Culver’s of Schererville for every pint of blood donated at an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. March 13 at Culver's, 980 W. U.S. 30. The goal is to collect 30 pints. Blood donors are asked to make appointments in advance.

Puerto Rican Parade and Cultural Organization of Northwest Indiana Inc. will host its third annual Scholarship Awards Fundraising Banquet at 6 p.m. March 13 at the Wicker Park Social Center, 8554 U.S. 41. Proceeds will fund scholarships, and 2010 scholarships will be awarded at the banquet.
