VETERANS PROGRAM | Highland

First Financial Bank's Crossroads Department presents a special veterans program, "War Dogs of the Pacific," at 1:30 p.m. today at the Munster Public Library, 8701 Calumet Ave. This documentary tells the story of the Marine Dog Platoons of World War II from the invasion of Guam to operations on Saipan, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima. Filled with historical footage and never-before-seen photos, a special introduction will be given by Edmund Adamski who served in the 3rd Marine War Dog Company while fighting in Guam. RSVP.

WOUNDED HEALERS | Highland

Wounded Healers Grief Support Program presents the Rev. Michael Yadron from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at St. James Church, Kennedy Avenue and 45th Street. Pastor of St. Thomas More Church in Munster, he will share his knowledge, expertise and personal experiences on working through the difficult issues of grief. The presentation is open to the public as a community service and is free.

HEALTH CARE DEBATE | Gary

The debate over a proposed public health care option will continue from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Nov. 5 in Savannah Auditorium, at the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway, at Indiana University Northwest. Dr. Bharat Pithadia, president of Pithadia Medical, will take the "pro" position on the so-called Public Option, while Dr. Alex Stemer, president and CEO of Medical Specialists Centers of Indiana, will present the argument in opposition. The Public Option, as it is commonly known, has become a source of controversy and debate in the halls of the U.S. Congress and across the country. Refreshments will be provided. Members of the campus and the Northwest Indiana community are encouraged to attend.

T'AI CHI CHIH | Highland

Justin Stone will lead participants in a series of 19 movements that are dedicated to improving the vital energy (Chi) within at a T'ai Chi Chih program at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. T'ai Chi Chih is very easy to learn and accessible for all fitness levels. FAMILY MOVIE BREAK | Munster

The entire family (children 5 and younger accompanied by an adult) is invited to view the video version of "The Life of Wilbur Robinson" by William Joyce, last month's children's selection for Books to Bridge the Region, at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Lake County Public Library's Munster branch, 8701 Calumet Ave. This futuristic story follows Lewis, a brilliant inventor whose latest project is the Memory Scanner, a machine that will help him find his birth mother so they can become a family. When it is stolen, Lewis meets a mysterious stranger named Wilbur who whisks our bewildered hero away in a time machine. Together they track down the thief. Rated G, run time is 102 minutes.

SUICIDE & SELF-INJURY | Hammond

An internationally recognized expert on self-injury treatment will be the keynote speaker of a conference focusing on Faces of Suicide: Suicide and Self-Injury, Nov. 5 at Purdue University Calumet. Wendy Lader, cofounder and clinical director of S.A.F.E. (Self Abuse Finally Ends) Alternatives, a frequent news media source and author, will speak during the afternoon. The conference, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the campus Calumet Conference Center, is intended for therapists, counselors, educators, youth workers, clergy, self-help leaders, parents, volunteers, law enforcement officials and others who desire to help someone struggling with self-harm and/or suicide-related issues. Morning presentations will focus on: Connection between Mental Health and Overall Health, Suicide in Northwest Indiana Communities, and Local and State Efforts in Suicide Prevention. The conference is presented by the Northwest Indiana Suicide Prevention Council and the Purdue Calumet Conference Center. Cost is $30 ($40 if professional CEUs are desired).

INFANT CPR CLASS | Crown Point

Training for Infant CPR and Choking will be offered at 5 and at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 and Dec. 3 at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Course will include instruction and practice in infant (newborn to 1 year) CPR and obstructed airway training. Class size is limited. Cost is $10.

FALL PLAY | Merrillville

Merrillville High School Drama Department will present its fall play, Craig Sodero's "High Spirits," at 7:05 p.m. Nov. 5, 6 and 7 and at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in Reinhart Auditorium at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. A family friendly comedy, the play follows a team of ghost hunters as they investigate and old Hollywood mansion believed to be inhabited by ghosts. The cast includes Alyssa Shirk, Russell Cole II, Madison Cofield, Parry Papamihalakis, Erika Denine Goode-Perry, Claudia Strong, Richard Carson Smith, Bre Pulphus, Nicole Varela, Kyle Daniels and Brandon Neal. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students (through grade 12) and senior citizens.

MACHO CHEFS | Gary

Urban League of Northwest Indiana Inc. Guild is seeking Northwest Indiana men willing to share their culinary talents and give back to the community by participating in the 18th Annual Macho Cuisine from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 21 at Baber Youth Center, 2001 Massachusetts St. Deadline for registration to compete for the title of Best Macho Chef is Nov. 6. Schererville Central Lions Club will hold an Oktoberfest from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at the St. John Township Center, 1515 W. U.SD. 30. YOUTH BASKETBALL | Hammond

Hammond Area YMCA will offer a fall Toddler & Youth Basketball session on Saturdays starting Nov. 7 and running through Dec. 19. Toddlers consist of ages 2 to 5 (must not be in kindergarten) and Youth consist of grades kindergarten through 6. Grades 2 to 6 will practice one day during the week. Basketball fundamentals, sportsmanship, team work and fun are taught and every child plays. Sessions will be held at the Hammond Area YMCA, 7322 Southeastern Ave.
