CROWN POINT | An Illinois man on Tuesday was charged with murder in the shooting death of a 31-year-old Hammond resident.
Logan B. Lake, 26, of Wonder Lake, Ill., is accused of fatally shooting Thomas Haynes Jr. on Jan. 28.
Haynes' body was discovered on the floor of his apartment in the 2400 block of New York Avenue by friends who had not been able to contact him, a charging affidavit states. Haynes died from a single gunshot wound to the back.
Investigators discovered the bullet, which matched a handgun owned by Haynes, lodged in a wall in his apartment, according to the affidavit.
Missing from the apartment were a PlayStation 3 video game system, dozens of BluRay movies and Haynes' cell phone.
Witnesses told police Haynes, who was laid off from his job, had arranged to buy Ecstasy from Lake's twin brother to make money, but Haynes later found he had been sold rock salt.
Haynes and Lake reportedly drove to Schaumburg, Ill., to recover the money used to buy the Ecstasy. They returned to Haynes' apartment, where Lake was seen after the shooting walking to a BP station and carrying a large plastic garbage bag, the affidavit states.
Lake was arrested on a South Shore train on an unrelated charge after East Chicago police received a tip about a man acting suspiciously. The confiscated items in the plastic bag were later identified as belonging to Haynes, the affidavit states.
