KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION | Highland
Kindergarten registration for the public schools in Highland will be held this week. Children who live in Highland and will be 5 on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to register. Parents will need five proofs of residency, such as a NIPSCO and telephone bill, driver's license and vehicle registration, rent or mortgage papers. They will also need the child's birth certificate, Social Security number and current immunization records. Children with last names beginning with A through J must register at their local school between 8:45 and 11 a.m. and those with last names beginning K through Z must register between 12:15 and 2:30 p.m. The schedule is: Warren Elementary, today; Johnston Elementary, March 9; Merkley Elementary, March 10; and Southridge Elementary, March 12. A $100 deposit is required to register for full-day kindergarten, which costs $1,900 for the 2010-11 school year.

PIONEER DAY | St. John
Fourth-grade classes at Crown Point Christian School, 10550 Park Place, have been studying pioneers in Social Studies. The finale of these studies will be held March 9, when each student becomes the pioneer of their choice from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (with a lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Visitors will see Abraham Lincoln, Davy Crockett, Laura Ingalls and others during a Pioneer Wax Museum. The classes will also enjoy a pioneer feast featuring food from the time period.

Christian Fellowship Church, 605 165th St., hosts the Women's Chamber Choir of The Master's College in Santa Clarita, Calif., at 7 p.m. March 9. The choir, a 15-member ensemble, is a music ministry with students representing various states and areas of study. It was formed in 2000.

MEALS ON WHEELS | Merrillville
Meals on Wheels, a community based and volunteer driven nonprofit agency, provides more than 1,600 nutritious meals daily to homebound elderly, ill, disabled, and children in daycares in Lake County. Volunteers help seniors remain independent in their homes by delivering meals one day a week in their own neighborhood. All interested and prospective volunteers are invited to a Volunteer Orientation and Training Session from 10:30 a.m. to noon March 9 or 1 to 2:30 p.m. March 18 at the Meals on Wheels Central Kitchen, 8446 Virginia St. Registration is preferred. Volunteer training sessions are held monthly from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the second Tuesday and 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Thursday.

KINDERGARTEN KICKOFF | Hobart
A Kindergarten Kickoff program will be held at 6 p.m. March 9 at the new Early Learning Center at George Earle Elementary School, 400 N. Wilson St. Parents should report to the gym to pick up a registration folder, and will then attend a Frequently Asked Questions session from 6 to 6:30 in the gym while children visit a K-Kids Lineup to Meet Dr. Seuss in the Music Room and Move & Groove to Dr. Seuss in the Computer Room. Children return to the gym in a Dr. Seuss Parade at 6:40, followed by refreshments of green eggs and ham, cookies and punch. From 6:40 to 8, families will choose a different activity every 20 minutes, including math, finger plays, Make It Take It and sensory fun. Parents as Teachers also will offer a Dr. Seuss treasure hunt from 6:40 to 8 for all children birth to kindergarten age.

MAPLE SYRUP TIME | Hobart
Groups, from first-graders through adults, are welcome to make reservations for the Maple Syrup Time program at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Two-hour tours are available by reservation only from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 10, 11, 15, 16, 17 and 18. The fee is $1 per person, with an advance must be deposit to secure the reservation. Groups of up to 120 can be accommodated at one time. HUNTER SAFETY | Crown Point
Lake County Parks Department hosts an Indiana Department of Natural Resources hunter's education safety course from 6 to 9 p.m. March 12 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 13 at Lemon Lake County Park, 6322 W. 133rd Ave., just east of Cedar Lake. This two-day class is recommended for hunters of all ages and experience levels. It is required by state law for hunters born after Dec. 31, 1986. Participants will learn about firearms safety, survival, first-aid, wildlife identification and management, hunter responsibility and ethics. After 10 hours of class, participants will take a written exam. Those who pass will receive a certified hunter's education card good for life, required for those hunting out-of-state and or participating in state-sponsored hunts. Children 12 and younger are required to have an adult present at class. Registration is required. A local youth and young men's hockey team is seeking a company sponsor to help offset the cost to play in a league at Midwest Training and Ice Center in Dyer.
