SIMPLY GIVE | Merrillville

Meijer is teaming up with shoppers to restock the shelves of approximately 190 local food banks as part of the grocer's Simply Give food pantry donation program. Now through May 15, Meijer shoppers are encouraged to buy a $10 Meijer Food Pantry Donation Card at special displays throughout the stores. These cards are converted into Meijer gift cards and given to a local food pantry selected by each individual store. The Merrillville store at 611 U.S. 30 has selected to help the Ross Township Food Pantry in Merrillville. Meijer is seeding the program with $100,000 in grocery gift cards to be divided equally among all participating food pantries.

POLICE HONORS | Schererville

Schererville Police Department will host a Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Day Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. May 14 at 25 E. Joliet St. Guest speaker at this service commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers will be Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller.

HUGE YARD SALE | Hebron

A huge yard sale will be hosted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14 and 15 at Range Line Presbyterian Church, on Clay Street just north of Ind. 2 one mile east of Interstate 65. Vendors can set up a booth in a 10-by-10-foot space, with one table provided, for $10 for one day or $15 for both days. The church will also be selling donated items, with proceeds going to a mission trip to Kentucky this summer.

VOICES OF REASON | Merrillville

OBSERVATORY OPEN | Lowell

Calumet Astronomical Society will host its spring public outing, "A Dipper Full of Stars, Mars and Saturn, Too," from 8 to 11 p.m. May 14 and 15 at the Thomas Conway Observatory, 191st and Chase Street, just southeast of Buckley Homestead County Park. Members of the Society will answer questions about astronomy and provide visitors with an opportunity to view planets, galaxies, and other celestial objects through binoculars and telescopes.  Dress appropriately. Inclement, cloudy weather conditions will cause the program to be cancelled without advance notice.

BABY-SITTING COURSE | Crown Point

Register by May 14 for the baby-sitting course for ages 10 older offered by the Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department and American Red Cross from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 22 at the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East St.  Learn valuable safety tips and baby-sitting abilities. Bring a sack lunch and a baby doll to practice with. Fee is $40 for residents and $50 for nonresidents.

GOLF OUTING | Crown Point

Crown Point Lions Club will host its annual golf outing May 15 at Pheasant Valley Country Club, 3838 W. 141st Ave. Cost is $80 for round of golf, use of cart, door prizes and a steak dinner. BABY-SITTING CLASS | Hobart

Baby-sitting training will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15 at Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Students will be trained to understand Baby-sitting as a Business, Success on the Job, Child Care Essentials, Safety for the Sitter, Injury Management, Preventing Problem Behavior, Care of Choking Infant and Care of Choking Child. The course introduces Preventing Injuries and Behavior Management. Students will receive a Safe Sitter card upon successfully completing the course, and a Safe Sitter Manual. Students need to bring a sack lunch. Cost is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers. Call to register. Class size is limited.

WATER SAFETY DAY | Lake County

Local YMCA's are hosting a Water Safety Day to help prepare each family for a safe fun summer in and around the water. All ages are welcome. Free to the community, the event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. May 15 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place, from 3 to 5 p.m. May 21 at Southlake YMCA, 1250 S. Court St., and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 22 at Hammond Area YMCA, 7322 Southeastern Ave.

BEST OF BROADWAY | LOFS

"A Tribute to Broadway: With a Spotlight on Our Community’s Stars!" is a special Winfield/Lake of the Four Seasons Chamber of Commerce fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. May 15 at the LOFS Clubhouse. Memorable songs from great Broadway musicals will be performed by Laura Lee and Tommy Fagan. Cocktails at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 and show at 7:30. Taking center stage are chamber volunteers who will be honored. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the chamber office, from any chamber member or by phone.

MEET THE POET | Lowell

Meet legendary poet Emily Dickinson, The Belle of Amherst, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 15 at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. See history come alive as professional storyteller Paddy Lynn, dressed in the costume of the period, portrays Dickinson and offers insight into one of the world’s greatest poets. Learn of Dickinson’s childhood, the events that influenced her and her self-imposed seclusion from social life. Listen as her poetry come to life. There is reserve seating for visiting Indiana Poetry Federation members. Additional space is limited, and registration is required.

CHARGE IT RIGHT | Merrillville

A free financial literacy presentation, "Charge It Right - How to Make a Credit Card Work FOR You!" by Lisa Crabtree, Merrillville branch supervisor for Centier Bank, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. May 15 in Meeting Room A, lower level at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. The course will help attendees learn how to use a credit card wisely, plus how to determine which card is best for you, how to get your free credit report, the cost of making only the minimum payments and benefits of making larger payments and tips for using a credit card.

SAFE BOATING COURSE | Cedar Lake

Burns Waterway Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is presenting a two-session course on boating safety from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, May 15 and 22, at the Cedar Lake Yacht Club, 13700 Cedar St., just north of the Cedar Lake Town Complex. Subjects will include knowledge about boats, things to do before getting underway, navigating waterways, operating a boat safely, boating emergencies, legal requirements, and water sports. A certification will be awarded for successful completion of the final examination. This certificate may help in getting lower insurance rates with some insurance companies, and a free year's membership to BOAT U.S. The material fee is $25; additional family members $20. No children younger than 15 can be enrolled. Advance registration is required.

LEARN TO FLY DAY | Valparaiso

Bring a child to the Porter County Airport, 4207 Murvihill Road, to participate in International Learn To Fly Day on May 15. Free Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagle Flights sponsored by Northwest Indiana EAA Chapter 104 will be available to youths 8 through 17 from 8 a.m. to noon. AUDITION FOR MUSICAL | Hobart

Ross Music Theatre will hold auditions for its summer musical, "Ragtime," at 6:30 p.m. May 15 and 16 in Reinhart Auditorium at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. Based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families at the turn of the 20th century as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Show dates are July 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, and Aug. 1. Fill out an audition form on line to save time. Also, audition/sign up for the Children's Musical Theatre Camp will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 15 in Reinhart Auditorium. Information on rehearsal dates, times, location, and show dates, time, and location will be available at that time.

PET EXPO | Crown Point

Third Annual Lake County Pet Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15 in the Industrial Arts Building at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St., with net proceeds benefitting area animal shelters. More than 50 booths will feature various local rescue groups and pet merchants. Animals available for adoption will be onsite to meet and greet, a veterinarian will be available for questions, mini seminars will be held throughout the day on topics such as pet care, breeds and training. Live demonstrations will feature police K9 units, training and agility courses, animal massage and Reiki treatments. Family fun events include pet costume contests, a face painting clown, pet races, raffles and a bean bag toss. Admission is $5 per adult and $3 per senior citizen; children 12 and younger enter free.

PORKER RUN | Hammond

Region Two Lake County ABATE is hosting its annual Porker Run on May 15, with stops at several Lake County locations. This ride is open to the public, and registration is from 9 a.m. until noon at the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority at Kennedy Avenue and Interstate 80/94. Cost is $10 per person, with maps and directions available at registration. There will be a fun skills test at each stop and food and drinks will be available at the last stop. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places in the skills test.

FAREWELL PICNIC | Dyer

A Farewell to St. Joseph School in Dyer will be held May 16 at the school, 430 Joliet St. All families, former school families, alumni, and supporters of St. Joseph School are invited to tour the school from noon to 1 p.m. and picnic together. Bring a picnic lunch for your family and share memories, friendship, and fun on the school/parish grounds until 3.

SPRING LUNCHEON | Hobart

Beta Xi Chapter of Psi Iota Xi sorority will hold its annual Spring Luncheon and runway Fashion Show, with fashions by Seasons on the Square, at 1 p.m. May 16 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. Door prizes and raffles, along with a silent auction that begins at 12:30 p.m. Funds raised will promote efforts in speech & hearing, music, art, and literature. HUB RUN | Crown Point

The 30th Anniversary Hub Run, a 5K/2K race, will be held at 2 p.m. May 16 with a new course starting and finishing at the Old Lake County Courthouse on the downtown square and using the streets of the town. Entry fee is $16 for adults and $8 for children in grade 8 and younger or additional family members, and includes a race shirt.

STUDY REPTILES | Hammond

A Reptile & Amphibian Study program will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. May 16 at Gibson Woods Gibson Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave. Ages 12 and older will discover the differences between species and how environmental conditions directly affect their populations. Find out where they live, what they eat and how they reproduce. For Boy Scouts, this program meets some of the requirements for the Reptile and Amphibian Merit Badge. Fee is $7. Register early, since class size is limited.
