VETERANS AID SEMINAR | Whiting
The Veterans Aid and Attendance special pension is a benefit that may be available for veterans and/or surviving spouses and widows, to assist with the cost of long-term care. It is a nonservice connected disability benefit. Eligible periods of war are: World War I: April 6, 1917 through Nov. 11, 1918; World War II: Dec. 7, 1941 through Dec. 31, 1946; Korean War: June 27, 1950 through Jan. 31, 1955; Vietnam War: Aug. 5, 1964 (Feb. 28, 1961, for veterans who served "in country" before Aug. 5, 1964) through May 7, 1975. Learn how to qualify for up to $l,949 a month, tax free. Jim Sandrick, professional member of the Veterans Assistance Association, will be providing information at a VA benefits seminar at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Whiting Elks Lodge No. 1273 at 1521 119th St.

SING-ALONG MESSIAH | St. John
The Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Nancy Menk, presents its annual sing-along version of Handel’s Messiah, at 3 p.m. Nov. 29 at St. John the Evangelist Church. Hear the stirring story of the life of Jesus featuring the famous hallelujah chorus. Guest soloists will join the chorus. Tickets are general admission; $15 in advance and $20 at the door; students are $10 and children 9 and older are welcome with a parent.

HUMANITIES DEGREE | Whiting
Calumet College of St. Joseph is introducing a new accelerated humanities degree geared to students who have completed at least 52 credit hours and would like to complete their degree in as little as 18 months. Classes meet one evening per week and are now forming for the January 2010 semester. CHARITABLE GIFT SEMINAR | Hobart
Professional advisers including attorneys, accountants and financial planners are invited to attend a seminar on the Latest Developments in Charitable Gift Planning, presented by The Stelter Co. and sponsored by Lake County's Legacy Foundation. Registration ends Dec. 2 for the annual Lake Station Lions lunch for Lake Station senior citizens age 62 and older. The free lunch is at noon Dec. 6 at Edison Jr./Sr. High School, 3304 Parkside Ave. The meal includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, beverages and dessert.

Jesus Saves M.B. Church in Gary is sponsoring a shopping trip to Gurnee Mills on Dec. 5. Cost is $15 for all ages round trip, leaving The Village at 9 a.m. and departing Gurnee Mills at 6 p.m. to return.

Registration deadline is Dec. 7 for an early afternoon lunch with Mrs. Claus at Centennial Park Banquet Facility from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 13. Mrs. Claus will share stories about Santa, Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer gang as well as an exciting message from Santa. She has even scheduled time for Santa to stop by, so he can spend time with the children. Be sure to bring your camera for this photo opportunity. Cost is $30 for a resident couple, $40 for nonresident couple and $10 for each additional family member.
