LOWELL | The Lowell Little League will be making its home on 34 acres at Freedom Park, a 117-acre park owned by the town and Cedar Creek and West Creek townships.
The Town Council recently gave unanimous approval to an agreement with the Lowell Little League in which 34 acres in the park's northeast quadrant south of the Freedom BMX track will be leased to the nonprofit youth organization for 25 years.
Earlier, the Freedom Park Board, made up of town and township representatives, including Councilman Shane Tucker, D-2nd, approved the agreement and recommended it to the council.
The league's rent will be 10 percent of its net income from concession sales on the property, due monthly.
While the town will be responsible for installing and maintaining utilities, the league agrees to pay capital and operating costs for any utilities it should request.
Lowell Parks Superintendent Tom Sullivan said there are no utilities on the 34 acres currently, but Freedom BMX has a transformer.
Sullivan said it's his understanding the league wants to get at least two fields installed initially with more to come as finances allow. The agreement allows for eight fields to be constructed, with stipulations that no heavy construction traffic be allowed during BMX and soccer activities.
No baseball field construction will be permitted to interfere with use of the award-winning Lowell Bark Park, also in Freedom Park, 17105 Cline Ave.
All improvements such as a concessions building and the like must be presented to the Town Council before construction.
While the town has no obligation, it is possible that the town may help the Lowell Little League obtain financing through government grants.
For many years, the league played its games on fields on Lowell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6841 land but lost that venue in recent years.
