An Illinois woman drowned early Monday when her car veered off Interstate 94 near the Michigan border and into a pond in one of a rash of accidents in the wake of the first snow of the season.
More snow is expected in parts of the area throughout the first part of the week.
Authorities said Srisangud Tulayasook, 75, of Wilmette, was believed to be on her way to Michigan at about 6 a.m. when her vehicle went off the road near the Indiana-Michigan border.
Tulayasook called 911 to say she was in a pond and her car was filling with water, authorities said.
Emergency responders found the car in about 5 feet of water -- Tulayasook was already dead. A preliminary investigation showed she tried getting out of the car.
Light snow in the area had apparently melted on contact with the warm roads near the site of the site of the accident and then froze again in the lower temperatures.
Snow also snarled traffic and delayed schools across central and southern Indiana on Monday. Crashes left one person dead.
The forecast for the rest of the week calls for a chance of intermittent light snow this morning in the Chicago area, with the snow becoming steadier in the afternoon and accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.
Northwest Indiana could see more rain than snow, National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Rodriguez said.
"Snow is likely to overspread the area later in the afternoon and then quickly transition to rain in the Northwest Indiana area before switching back to snow on Wednesday," Rodriguez said.
Weather contributed to a number of other accidents Monday across Indiana.
A series of collisions occurred around 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Clinton County, about 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
Five vehicles were scattered across the highway from weather-related crashes when a semitrailer went through, striking all five and killing Rafael Hill, 21, of Lebanon, who had left his vehicle. No one else was injured.
The highway was closed for three hours.
Indiana State Police said the snowy conditions also led to numerous slide-offs and crashes on Interstate 69 in Delaware and Grant counties and about 100 in the Indianapolis area.
Power lines fell on a school bus after it collided with a sport utility vehicle on Indianapolis' northeast side, but no injuries were reported.
Traffic on I-69 in Fort Wayne was down to one lane after a multivehicle accident.
