CHILD CARE | Hammond

Openings remain in the Purdue University Calumet Charlotte R. Riley Child Center for youngsters 3 to 6 years old who are eager to learn and engage in active, hands-on experiences and activities. Full- and part-time enrollment slots are available in the center, which is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The full-time option includes morning and afternoon preschool. Full-day kindergarten, including wrap-around care, is available for children who meet state of Indiana age requirements. The center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and serves as a laboratory setting for Purdue Calumet students studying early childhood development.

MONEY FOR AUTISM | Illinois/Indiana

Hobart mother Lisa Fox has joined parents and caregivers around the country in asking Facebook users to vote for the National Autism Association in the Chase Community Giving challenge. NAA is in the running for $1 million to be awarded to the top vote-getter in the program, which ends Jan. 22. Autism rates have risen sharply in recent years, with one in 110 children now affected, according to the organization. Fox is president of NAA's Northeast Indiana chapter. In addition to its family care programs, NAA advocates for the most relevant scientific research, legislation for access to medical care, coverage for medical and safety devices, services and support over the life span and protection from abuse towards individuals with autism. LIBRARY MEETING | Whiting

The Whiting Public Library board of trustees will meet in a closed executive session at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 22 to discuss personnel.

BRIDGE LESSONS  |  Munster

Beginning bridge lessons are being offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Friday at Hartsfield Village, 10000 Columbia Ave. Lessons are $5 with an opportunity to play afterward until 1 p.m. This is for newcomers and those wishing to brush up on their skills.

LUNCHEON | Gary

Jackie Peden, better known as Miss Jackie of WGVE 88.7 FM, will be hosting the first women walking in faith luncheon at 1 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Chanute Aquatorium in Marquette Park, 7500 Oak Ave., to honor and celebrate the women who have inspired and motivated others even when they were faced with the discouragement and inevitable disappointment of life. They sought the time to inspire, motivate, and encourage others because they chose to "Walk by Faith and Not by Sight," 2 Corinthians 5:7. This is a free event. SOFTBALL SIGNUP | Hobart

Hobart girls softball will conduct its 2010 player registration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 23 and Jan. 24 at Rosser Hall, 1421 W. 37th Ave. Registration fee is $60 per player for 5- and 6- year-olds and $90 for players 7 and older (with new rule change there is no upper age limit.) Each additional family member is $45 (with older player’s fee paid first). In addition, players must participate, or buy out of, the fundraiser. Registration is open to all girls and women 5 and older who are residents of Hobart, Hobart Township, Lake Station, New Chicago, Ainsworth, and Ross Township. Ages determined as of Dec. 31. This will be the only scheduled registration and roster sizes are limited.

ITALIAN DINNER | Lansing

The Humane Society Calumet Area is hosting an all-you-can-eat Italian dinner from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at Lansing Presbyterian Church, 2625 Ridge Road. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the shelter, 421 45th Ave. in Munster.

BRIDAL FAIR | Crown Point

Fourth annual bridal fair will be hosted from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 23 at First Financial Bank, 11890 Broadway. Admission is free. Attendees will receive a copy of "The Knot" magazine and enjoy networking, refreshments, and door prizes. Limited vendor space is still available at no charge.

RECLAIMING AMERICA | Crown Point

Tea Party of Lake County will host a candidates event from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the 4-H Building at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Doors open at 12:15 p.m. for meet and greet with the candidates. Speakers include Peter Heck, Emery McClendon, Richard Mourdock, Thomas Tabback and U.S. Senate candidates Don Bates Jr. and John Hostetler. A $6 donation is requested and seating is limited to 250.

ORGAN RECITAL | Gary

The Cathedral Arts Concert Series of the Cathedral of the Holy Angels in Gary presents its winter organ recital at 3 p.m. Jan. 31 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 6060 Miller Ave. Featured recitalist will be Derek Nickels, director of music and organist of the Church of the Holy Comforter, Kenilworth, Ill. Works by Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault, Robert Schumann, Marcel Dupré and J. S. Bach will be featured. The organ, designed by Lawrence Phelps, was built in 1962 by Casavant, opus 2740, two-manuals, 27 ranks. A free- will offering will be accepted. Free, secured parking in the church lot.

CARD/BUNCO PARTY | Hammond

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE | Lake County

The Beta Rho chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa is accepting applications for its academic scholarship. Candidates must be at least a college sophomore, a U.S. citizen residing in Northwest Indiana and a graduate of a Northwest Indiana high school. Interested individuals must have a GPA of 3.5 or better and show potential within their chosen field of study. Applicants must be full-time students but the college need not be in Indiana. Special scholarships are available on the state level in fine arts and music. There is also a Key scholarship for those with at least a five-year gap in their education without an undergraduate degree. Deadline to apply is Jan. 31.
