Northwest Indiana Organization prepares for Bud Billiken Parade

The I Too Sing America Organization Of Northwest Indiana, Inc., has been invited to participate in the 80th celebration of the Bud Billiken Parade on Aug. 8. Stacy Winfield, president of ITSA Organization states that since 1929, the Bud Billkien Parade and Picnic has been a central part of the Chicago African American community's summer. It is believed to be the nation's oldest and largest African American Parade. ITSA has just celebrated it second Black Musical Parade and Festival in June, that's patterned after the Bud Billiken Parade.

Burger King awards scholarships

The HAVE IT YOUR WAY Foundation announced it has awarded more than $1,000,000 in scholarships to a total of 944 students nationwide as part of the ninth annual Burger King Scholars Program. Among the winners are 89 students from Indiana. Morgan Midkiff, of Munster, was among the winners.

Local residents receive degree from Seton Hall University

The following residents graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.:

• John Newcomb, of Westville, received a master of arts in strategic comm and leadership in December 2008

• Brendan F. Ahearn, of Hammond, received a master of arts in education in professional development program in May 2009

11 receive scholarships through Hammond Education Foundation

Eleven 2009 graduates of School City of Hammond high schools received college scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year through the Hammond Education Foundation. Three $1,000 scholarships supported by the Hammond Optimist Club were awarded to Mary Colome of Clark (Purdue University Calumet), Nia Schexnider of Gavit (Prairie State College) and Waukee Phipps of Hammond High (Robert Morris University).

Receiving an HEF $1,000 scholarship. She plans to attend Purdue University.

Britney Franks of Morton (Indiana University) received a $1,000 HEF scholarship. Tomika Franks of Gavit (Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis) also received a $1,000 HEF scholarship.

Receiving $1,000 Hammond Teachers' Federation Scholarships are Hammond High graduates Yanni Dixon (IUPUI) and Daniel Munoz (Purdue).

Ryan Donovan of Clark (Indiana University) and Sarah Janiga of Hammond High (Butler) each received $1,000 scholarships.

Additionally, thanks to a gift from the former Whiting/Robertsdale Kiwanis Club, two $500 scholarships were awarded to Clark graduates Donovan and Amelia Dunn (Purdue).

Highland native graduates from medical school

Dr. Dana El-Sharif graduated from the American University of Antigua, College of Medicine, a Caribbean medical school with a U.S. based curriculum. A graduate of Highland High School, El-Sharif earned her bachelor's degree at Purdue University where she studied biological sciences.

45 De La Salle students chosen to 2008-09 Academic All-Catholic League Team

De La Salle Institute announces that 45 of its student-athletes from the Institute Campus for Young Men have been chosen to the 2008-09 Academic All-Catholic League Team. To qualify for this plaudit, students must have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better over their four years of high school.

Among the honorees were local students Jose Estrada, of Chicago's East Side; Derek Needham, of Dolton; and Raul Rodriguez, of Whiting.

Local students graduate from Denison University

Local students were among the 502 graduates awarded diplomas at Denison University's 168th commencement. Graduates included Joel David Cooper, of Munster. Cooper was awarded a bachelor of arts degree. Cooper graduated with an economics and history double major. He received the Dean's Award and studied abroad with Arcadia University's Center for Education Abroad at the Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.

Brieland Garrett Jones, of Homewood, was awarded a bachelor of science degree. Jones graduated with a biology major. He received the Heritage Scholarship and studied abroad with Arcadia University's Center for Education Abroad at the University of Western Australia.
