A 33-year-old Chicago man died late Sunday afternoon after being struck by his SUV parked in the median of Interstate 65 in Lake County.
Hector Lopez-Delgado was looking for "suspected engine problems" in his SUV, which was parked on the left shoulder of northbound I-65 about 4 p.m. when his SUV was hit by a speeding car, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
The car, driven by 45-year-old David Innes, of Acworth, Ga., was traveling in the center lane and swerved left to avoid traffic, hitting the SUV, which hit Lopez-Delgado. Lopez-Delgado was thrown 8 feet and later pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center in Hobart from massive trauma.
The emergency lights on the SUV were blinking at the time of the accident. Innes swerved right after hitting the SUV and swerved back left, ramming his vehicle into the median wall.
Lopez-Delgado's wife was in the SUV during the crash but not injured.
Innes was ticketed for driving at a speed too fast to avoid the crash. He complained of pain but refused medical treatment. Additional charges may be pending.
State police Sgt. Terry Gose said police found no signs of impairment and did not keep Innes in custody.
Gose said the case is still under investigation and will be referred to the Lake County prosecutor's office, which will decide whether to file charges.
As a result of the accident and investigation, traffic on northbound Interstate 65 was stop-and-go for more than four hours after the accident.
Hobart and Merrillville police departments, the Merrillville Fire Department, and the Indiana Department of Transportation Hoosier Helpers also responded to the accident.
