HAMMOND | Police say an officer shot a 39-year-old knife-wielding man threatening officers and medical workers Thursday night.

The Lake County coroner's office identified the man as Jerry Beverly, of the 7200 block of Kennedy Avenue. He died shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday of multiple gunshot wounds at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, a coroner's spokeswoman said.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said the Hammond Fire Department's ambulance was called to Beverly's home earlier in the evening to treat Beverly for a pain in his arm. Police were called to the scene at 9:25 p.m. because Beverly had been drinking.

Miller said an unidentified officer arrived to find Beverly holding a knife and refusing to drop it. The officer said Beverly charged at him with the upraised knife.

The officer fired two shots from his service weapon, police said. Beverly fell to the ground, was immediately treated by fire personnel and rushed to St. Catherine.

Miller said "upon cursory review, this shooting follows the Hammond Police Department guidelines concerning the use of deadly force by our officers." He said the unidentified officer, a 9-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave, as is routinely done in such incidents, and the Indiana State Police will independently investigate the shooting.

Beverly was involved in a similar incident Oct. 23 when officers were called to his home, Miller said. In that incident, Beverly had cut himself with a knife and said he wanted to die, Miller said.

Beverly was taken that day to a local hospital for an emergency 24-hour evaluation.
