MONDAY

CRAFT MANIA | Hobart

A weekly craft mania is being sponsored by Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. It’s a time to complete unfinished craft projects or start a craft project that you have wanted to accomplish. Come to the Y between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday mornings and bring that unfinished craft project or new project and join in the fun and fellowship with others. Also, join craft mania to learn to crochet or knit.

ASTRONOMY MEETING | St. John

Join the Calumet Astronomical Society at its general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the auditorium at Lake Central High School, 8400 U.S. 41. Guest speaker will be Kankakee Valley Astronomical Society's Tom Upham, who will discuss "2012," Planet X, and other astronomical disaster theories. General meetings are open to the public free of charge. For updates on meetings and pubic observing sessions, call the CAS Info Line at (773) 639-5491.

STORYTELLING GUILD | Schererville

Storytellers and those interested in the art can participate in monthly Northwest Indiana Storytelling Guild meetings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 8 and the second Monday every month at the Schererville Town Hall Community Room, 10 E. Joliet St. Experience storytellers will share stories and their techniques for telling them. Informational handouts and resources will be available to anyone wanting to get started in this past time. CHARTER SCHOOL | Schererville

Campagna Academy Charter School will hold Charter School Council meetings for the 2009-10 school year at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8, April 12 and June 14 in the Community Room at Campagna Academy 7403 Cline Ave. All meetings are open to the public.

PULMONARY SUPPORT | Crown Point

A Pulmonary Support Group meets at 1 p.m. Feb. 8 and the second Monday of each month at the Marian Education Center, St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Meetings provide support for adults who have chronic lung disease.

GLUTEN FREE SUPPORT | Hobart

Gluten Intolerance Group of Northwest Indiana is the local branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America, providing support to people with celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis and other gluten sensitivities. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 and the second Monday of every month in Conference Room 3A at St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. Use West entrance. Chapter offers meetings, informal gatherings, cooking classes, dinner outings and other activities.

HISTORIANS MEET | Dyer

Dyer Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Meeting Room at the Dyer Town Hall on U.S. 30, just east of Hart Street. Cynthia Ogorek, is the next guest speaker in a series of events celebrating the centennial of the incorporation of the town of Dyer. A noted public historian, author, and preservationist, Ogorek will speak about the history, evolution, and development of the Calumet River corridor. The public is invited to attend free and refreshments will be served.

SINGLES MEET | Hobart, Griffith

New Horizons Singles Club is a social club for single people, 50 and older, divorced, widowed, or never married, who love to get out and have a good time. Meetings are at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at Hobart Elks Lodge 1152, 3580 W. 61st Ave. Free dance lessons are held at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday followed by a dance at 8 p.m. (nonmembers pay $6), at Hobart Elks Lodge 1152. A monthly get together is also held at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at Villa Pizza, 333 N. Broad St., Griffith, and a Sunday brunch on the fourth Sunday of every month is held at different restaurants. Current members, about 160, come from Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago. Members also enjoy house parties and attend concerts, plays and movies together. Visitors are welcome before deciding to join.

LOVE FEST | Lake Station

Valentine’s Day will be celebrated the week of Feb. 9 to 15 at Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center at Three Rivers County Park, 28th Avenue and Colorado Street. The Love Fest includes making artful Valentines, heart treats and enjoying children’s poetry. General admission prices vary from $4.95 to $8.95 but check on line for specials at MyBellaboos.com or call. TOASTMASTERS CLUB | Merrillville

Toastmasters of Southlake helps its members learn to listen effectively, think on their feet and speak confidently. Learn valuable leadership skills. Club meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 9 and the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 8401 W. Ohio St. New members are welcome.

MOPS TO MEET | Schererville

Mothers of Preschoolers group will meet from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 9 and the second and fourth Tuesday of every month through May at Lake Hills Baptist Church, 9209 W. 85th Ave. Children's classes are provided while mothers enjoy breakfast and activities, including speakers on parenting, self-help, homemaking and crafts. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is preferred.

GARDENERS TO MEET | Hobart

Lake County Park Department's Gardening Club meets at 10 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Lake County Parks greenhouse, east of the Park and Visitor Services facility at 8305 Randolph St., one-four mile south of U.S. 30. Members learn about all types of flowers, plants, vegetables and trees and how to solve gardening problems, get a monthly newsletter and help the staff plant and maintain gardens at the county parks. Refreshments available. There are no dues.

CIVIL AIR PATROL | Merrillville

Anyone interested in aviation or emergency services is welcome to visit the local USAF Auxiliary - Civil Air Patrol unit. The Col. Jerry L. Ross Composite Squadron meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the American Red Cross of Northwest, 791 E. 83rd Ave.  The unit includes adult and teen (ages 12 to 18) members.

WEDNESDAY

MUSICAL AUDITIONS | Hammond

Auditions for the spring musical, a world premiere of "Children of the Earth" by John Lisbon Wood, music by Steve Shafer, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 10 and 11 in YJean Chambers Hall, third floor of Student Union Library Building at Purdue University Calumet, north of 173rd Street between Kennedy Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard. There are five parts for men, three for women, and one for a girl, with four chorus members required. Auditioners should bring sheet music for a prepared song, be able to learn and perform a few short dance moves, and be able to perform a short monologue. The show is a family-friendly, environmental fable about a group of animals who gather to stop the "taking creatures" from burning the planet. Performances are scheduled for 5 p.m. April 17 and 24 and 3 p.m. April 18 and 25.

WOMEN'S HEALTH FAIR | Schererville

The Health and Spirituality Committee of St. Michael Parish, 16 Wilhelm St., is hosting a women's health fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13 in the school gymnasium. Tickets are $5 and include lunch. The focus will be on holistic health and there will be presentations on laughter yoga and alternative therapies. Door and raffle prizes as well. Tickets on sale today and Feb. 7.
