CROWN POINT | A Gary man who has been diagnosed with a mental disorder will serve 20 years in prison for raping a teenage girl who was baby-sitting three children at the time of the attack.
Cornelius Hines, 22, had been facing five felony charges of rape, criminal deviate conduct, confinement, burglary and battery. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, Hines pleaded guilty but mentally ill to rape in August, prosecutors said.
The 16-year-old victim was caring for three young children June 21, 2008, when Hines entered the house through a bedroom window. Armed with a large kitchen knife, Hines told the children to stand up against the wall and not move or he would kill them.
Hines then forced the baby-sitter into a bedroom, where she was raped.
One of the children ran from the house and alerted a neighbor. When Hines heard the knock on the bedroom window, he ran outside where the neighbor and several other people restrained him until police arrived.
Hines was lying naked with socks on his feet and a rag on his head when Gary police arrived, according to court records. The girl stood nearby crying, wearing only a white button-down shirt given to her by a neighbor.
Hines told police he went to the house to visit a friend, saw the teen in the bedroom and asked what she was doing. He said he started to take off his shorts and a knife fell out of his pocket, which scared her, police said. Hines said the kids heard the teen scream, then some "dudes" came in, and one had a gun.
