MERRILLVILLE | The Spring Mill Health Campus expects its new facility for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other dementia will be constructed by next summer.
The health campus on Monday broke ground for the 30-unit community, which is called The Legacy, at 101 W. 87th Ave.
Marnie Davisson, Spring Mill Health Campus' executive director, said all aspects at the facility are designed for people with Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia.
She said only certain paint colors and artwork will be used so residents aren't overstimulated, and all features are based on criteria supported by advocacy groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
The Legacy also will feature life stations, which will encourage residents to engage in familiar tasks, help them remember their past and help them to feel productive, Davisson said. One of the life stations has an office theme, she said.
"We're just thrilled we can offer this to people in the community," Davisson said.
