CROWN POINT | Bail has been set at $50,000 for an 18-year-old St. John man whose mother turned him into police in a theft case, Lake Criminal Court records show.

Zachary Bell is scheduled to formally appear in Lake County court July 24 on felony theft charges, court records show.

Bell's mother called police after she recognized her son in surveillance photos published on The Times' website. The photos showed a suspect wanted in connection with a string of thefts near the intersection of 84th and Christopher Drive in St. John.

Bell allegedly took cash, credit and gift cards and a .45-caliber handgun. Still photos from the surveillance video that accompanied a story on The Times' website showed the suspect using a stolen Speedway gift card at the Speedway gas station, 8575 Wicker Ave.
