With graveside services, wreath-laying ceremonies and parades, the region is celebrating Memorial Day weekend.

Most observances are Monday, but Calumet Park Cemetery, 2305 W. 73rd Ave., Merrillville, has three days of celebrations, beginning Saturday.

CROWN POINT | St. Matthias Parish will celebrate Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at historic Maplewood Cemetery, at the corner of Wells and Pettibone streets. Those attending the service are asked to bring a lawn chair and stay for the American Legion/Veterans of Foreign Wars program that follows.

EAST CHICAGO | The East Chicago Marina will hold its annual Blessing of the Water at 10 a.m. Monday on the marina boardwalk.

GRIFFITH | The Memorial Day program will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Griffith War Memorial in Central Park at the intersection of Broad and Oak streets. U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, is scheduled to speak.

HAMMOND | Several ceremonies will mark the city's observance of Memorial Day.

• St. John/St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery will participate in the national celebration Service God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the cemetery, 1547 167th St., Hammond.

• VFW Post 802 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Harrison Park at Hohman Avenue and Waltham Street.

• The Hammond Mohawks Club's annual Memorial Day parade is set for 11 a.m. at Cavalier Inn on Gostlin Street and Baltimore Avenue. The parade ends at St. Casimir Catholic Church at Cameron Avenue and Huehn Street.

HIGHLAND | The Highland Council of Community Events is coordinating the 10 a.m. Memorial Day service at Main Square Park gazebo.

HOBART | Hobart's Memorial Day service is at 11 a.m. Monday at the Doughboy Monument at Seventh and Main streets.

LAKE STATION | A service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Park near Putnam and Fairview streets. 

LEROY | The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee and the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department will host a Memorial Day service at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Stoney Run County Park, 142nd and Union streets, Leroy.

MERRILLVILLE | Three days of services are planned at Calumet Park Cemetery, 7535 Taft St., Merrillville, beginning with a 10 a.m. Saturday offering by the Descent of the Holy Ghost Church.

A fireworks show and hayride are planned at the cemetery at 7 p.m. Saturday.

A Veterans Memorial Service, sponsored by the American Legion 1st District, is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery. U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville will speak.

A shared Catholic, St. Sava Serbian Orthodox and First Presbyterian Church of Merrillville service is at 10 a.m. Monday at the cemetery. SS Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church has a service at 10:45 a.m., and the Battle of the Bulge memorial ceremony is at 12:30 p.m. in the veterans' section.

MUNSTER | The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2697 will conduct a 10 a.m. Monday ceremony at the Christian Reformed Church cemetery, Ridge Road and Hohman Avenue.

The post also will conduct a service at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Veterans Memorial, Calumet Avenue and Superior Street. American Legion Post 16, Munster High School band, Munster Police Department Honor Guard and special guests Gabrielle Rapin and Jim Markewicz will participate. 

ST. JOHN | VFW Post 717 will host its Memorial Day program at 8:30 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church, 10701 Olcott Ave., following Mass. The program includes a three-volley gun salute. The VFW Post will repeat the program at St. Micheal the Archangel Church in Schererville at 9:45 a.m., following Mass.

WHITING | Coffee and doughnuts will be served at American Legion Post 80, 2003 Indianapolis Blvd., Whiting, at 9:30 a.m Monday. The group will assemble outside the post at 10:45 a.m. to begin the march to the Veterans Memorial at 119th and Oliver streets. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute, music by the Whiting High School Band and the laying of the wreath.

The group will then return to the legion for fellowship.

VALPARAISO | A Memorial Day program is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Griegers Motors, 1756 U.S. 30. There will be a color guard, a gun salute and taps, in addition to speakers.

CHESTERTON | The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 905 of Porter County, will host a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Indiana Memorial Wall, Ind. 49 and Porter Road. The service will include posting of the colors, JROTC drill exhibition, bagpipe music, speakers, the reading of the names of local veterans who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and the posting of a memorial wreath.

PORTAGE | Portage American Legion Post 260 will honor servicemen and servicewomen with a parade that will line up at the Portage Mall at 11 a.m. Monday and commence at noon. The parade will travel west to Calvary Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Day service at the cemetery upon arrival, and participants are invited to Legion Post 260 on Mulberry Street for refreshments.

HEBRON | The Hebron American Legion Post 190 will host its annual Memorial Day service honoring all war veterans. The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hebron Cemetery, U.S 231 and County Road 900 South.

ILLINOIS

CALUMET CITY | A Memorial Day ceremony is set for noon Monday at American Legion Calumet Memorial Post 330, 950 Legion Drive. For information call (708) 862-8685.

CRETE | Crete Memorial Day veterans service and parade will start with memorial services at 11 a.m. Monday at Crete Park, 515 First St., followed by a parade at noon down Main Street to Burville Road. Parade apps available. For information, call Barbara Ray at (708) 672-5479.

LANSING | Lansing Veterans Memorial will host a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lansing Memorial site, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Burnham Avenue at the Lansing Municipal Airport. In memory of all our servicemen men and servicewomen, attendees are asked to bring their deceased loved ones' burial flag and be recognized during the ceremony. Appearing at this year's ceremony will be members of the Our Lady of Knock Contemporary Guitar Group. The Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard will be presented with U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration Commemorative Partner Program membership and commemorative flag. All veterans and family are welcome. The traditional gun salute and taps will follow the guest speaker. A wreath laying and the raising of service flags will be part of the program. Bring lawn chairs; no seating is provided. SOUTH HOLLAND | The Memorial Day parade will start at 11 a.m. Monday along South Park Avenue from 170th Street to 160th Place. The Remembrance Ceremony will start about 1 p.m. near the Veterans Memorial Plaza and War Monument at Veterans Memorial Park, 160th Place and South Park Avenue. Little League baseball and softball all-star games will follow at 2 p.m., with refreshments available for purchase from Home Plate Grill. For more information (708) 210-2900.
