Two local men were arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly breaking into cars in the East Chicago South Shore station parking lot, police said.
Ahmad Yousif Zaid, 20, of the 6400 block of Garfield Ave. in Hammond and Julio Calzada, 25, of the 3500 block of Fir Street in East Chicago, were charged with theft, criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement, according to Chief Robert Byrd of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District's transit police.
At 5 a.m. Tuesday, NICTD K-9 Officer Jason Greene allegedly saw Zaid and Calzada smash windows on two cars in the lot, go into the vehicles and steal property. When Greene approached them, they allegedly fled in Zaid's black Lincoln Navigator, Byrd said.
Zaid allegedly drove eastbound on Michigan Avenue to northbound Cline Avenue and westbound Columbus Avenue, where East Chicago police had the roadway blocked.
Both suspects were taken into custody at the roadblock without further incident, Byrd said.
The cars involved in the thefts belonged to residents of Hammond and Barrington, Ill. Byrd said police were able to recover the property taken from their vehicles.
Police from Hammond and East Chicago assisted in the investigation.
