SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE | Hammond

The Hammond Gammu Nu chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa is looking for applicants to sponsor for a $1,000 scholarship at the state level of Tri Kappa. Any full-time student enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate program that has completed at least one academic year and has a Hammond home address may apply. The criterion used by the Tri Kappa selection committee are academic achievement, strong goals, extracurricular activities, work experience and volunteer service. HOMEMAKERS MEETING | Munster

The Munster Extension Homemakers will meet at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15 in the Munster Public Library, 8701 Calumet Ave. Participants are asked to bring the tabs from soda pop cans and cancelled stamps for recycling.

DANCE INVITATIONAL | Munster

The 12th annual Munster Dance Invitational takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Munster High School gymnasium, 8808 Columbia Ave. Teams from across Indiana compete at one of the region's largest dance invitationals in solo, ensemble, pom, jazz and hip-hop categories. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

BEATLES NIGHT | Hobart

The Hobart Family YMCA hosts a Beatles Night with Chris & Lou on Jan. 16 at the River Point Country Club, 6700 Country Club. Mexican buffet begins at 6 p.m. and show starts at 7 p.m. Cost is $30 per person. Tickets are sold at the Hobart YMCA.

PEARL HARBOR GROUP | Highland

Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Indiana Chapter 2, and Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Indiana Chapter 2, will be holding their joint monthly meeting at noon Jan. 16 at Michael's Restaurant, 2040 45th St. Interested parties are invited to attend, reservations not required.

GOSPEL AWARDS | Gary

The African American Achievers Youth Corps Inc. will host their second annual Stellar Gospel Awards - Gary Style at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 in The Glen, 20 W. Ridge Road. The event features the best gospel talent in Gary. Finalists were nominated by the public and the public has until Jan. 16 to vote for them using ballots from Gary newspaper weeklies. There is a maximum of five nominees in each category and the winners for each category will be announced at the Stellar Awards celebration. Tickets for the event are $20 and may be purchased at Beautiful Things, 3570 Village Court. Cost at the door is $25.

MUSIC SHOWCASE | Highland

HGS Music is hosting its semiannual student showcase beginning at noon Jan. 17 at the Wicker Park Social Center, at the corner of Ridge Road and Indianapolis Boulevard. The free event offers music students an opportunity to show off their skills on a variety of instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, piano, vocals and drums.

CRIME WATCH MEETING | East Hammond, Pullman

The East Hammond/Pullman Crime Watch organization will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Ophelia Steen Community Center, 5927 Columbia Ave. The guest speaker will be Ralph Maginot, of R & L Securities. He will

provide information and products on self-defense and security systems. He will demonstrate products to keep the home more secure and personal security items. He will also answer questions from the attendees.

Information on recent criminal activities in the area will be presented by the Hammond Police Department

SINGLE MOMS MEET | Highland

Outreach to Single Moms will host their regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 in Room 202 at Suburban Bible Church, 3010 41st St. Mug & Muffin Night is the event of the evening. Bring your favorite mug and we'll fill it with something hot and sweet to drink. This outreach ministry addresses both physical and spiritual needs of single moms. It is open to all single moms who care for children under the age of 25.

RESPECT LIFE PRAYER SERVICE | Whiting

The Whiting/Robertsdale Peace and Social Justice Commission and the Faith Enrichment Committee are sponsoring a Respect Life prayer service at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 to be hosted by St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 119th Street and Lincoln Avenue, to commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court's decision to legalize abortion in the United States. The evening will include inspirational readings, sacred Scripture and song. The guest speaker is the Rev. Leon Flaherty, C.PP.S., associate pastor at St. John Church.

SOUP/SALAD DINNER | Hammond

St. John Bosco seventh-graders are sponsoring an all-you-can-eat soup and salad dinner from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 22. Cost is $7 per person. Event is in the school cafeteria, 1231 171st Place. Soups served include lemon rice, potato, sausage tortellini, French onion, chicken noodle and others. Salad and bread will also be served, as well as hot dogs and chili dogs. There will also be a wide variety of drinks and desserts.

TACO NIGHT | Griffith

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 66, 132 N. Wiggs Ave., is serving tacos and tostados from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22. Tacos and tostados are $2 each. Margaritas are $1.25. Carry-outs are available. Desserts are available for purchase. Proceeds are used for veterans and community projects.

AEROBICS CLASS | East Chicago

The East Chicago Parks and Recreation Department is offering an adult aerobics class from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 25 through May 26 at the Roxana Community Center, 900 Shell St.

Step, ball and strength exercises will be part of the exercise routine. Classes are free to East Chicago residents; proof of residency is required at time of registration.

INTERNATIONAL CUISINE | Merrillville

Northwest Indiana Adult Guardianship Services Inc. in conjunction with the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Northwest Indiana present a fundraising event, adventures in international cuisine, from 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 28 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. Proceed will fund adult guardianship services for incapacitated adults as well as provided culinary arts scholarship opportunities for future chefs. The Northwest Indiana agency serves Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton and Starke counties. Tickets are $100 per person, which includes a multiple-course dinner featuring a variety of ethnic cuisines prepared by top chefs. Sponsors and advertisers as well as donations of items to be auctioned off are welcomed.

PASTA DINNER | Merrillville

Monsignor Hoffman Council 13003 Knights of Columbus will host its annual all-you-can-eat pasta dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at St. Joan of Arc Church, 200 E. 78th Ave. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 7 to 11; younger children eat free. Desserts, soft drinks and adult beverages are available. Proceeds benefit Prayer Shawl Ministry and Faith Formation Program.

SPAGHETTI DINNER | Griffith

The Griffith Public Schools Educational Foundation hosts its 19th annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Griffith Middle/High School cafeteria, 600 N. Wiggs Ave. Dinner includes spaghetti or slice of pizza, salad, bread, dessert and drink. Adults cost $5, senior citizens $4 and children elementary age and younger cost $3. Carry-outs available but drink not included in carry-out orders. Dinner precedes the Griffth-Andrean boys basketball game.

ESSAY CONTEST | Gary

Entry deadline is Jan. 29 for The Roosevelt Class of '63 Lady Panthers and supporters essay contest titled "The Mrs. Ruth Battle I Am My Sister's Keeper." It is open to all Roosevelt Business and Technical Academy female students. The winner will receive $200. If she is the daughter or granddaughter of a member of the class of 1963, she will receive $250. Contestants may forward their essays to '63 ‘Velt Lady Panthers, P. O.
