CROWN POINT | The murder trial of a Calumet Township man expected to begin Monday was continued to August.

Free on bond, George Knezevic, 61, last week again rejected a plea deal in the case opting for trial, but problems with the appearance of a key witness prompted prosecutors to seek a postponement.

Court records state when police were called to the home Knezevic shared with his mother in October 2010 in the 4700 block of Buchanan Street, they found the 94-year-old woman in pain, bruised, unable to speak and wearing wet clothes in the trash-filled house.

Witnesses told police Knezevic had choked the woman outside the house before spraying her with a garden hose and pulling her into the house by her hair.

On Monday, the court set a new trial date for Aug. 5.
