CROWN POINT | A 24-year-old Cedar Lake man was sentenced Friday to 80 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of a neighbor before he set fire to the man's house.
Anthony LaPorta last month admitted to the slaying and assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a separate case.
In a plea bargain before Lake Criminal Court Judge Diane Boswell, LaPorta agreed to serve 62 years for murdering his next-door neighbor, Adam Giordano, and 18 years for arson. A two-year sentence for sexual battery will be served concurrently with the 80-year sentence.
All remaining charges were dismissed under the plea bargain. LaPorta had faced the possibility of life without parole before agreeing to the terms of the plea agreement.
Police were called to a fire July 11 and discovered the body of Giordano, 32, in the living room of his home in the 14700 block of Cline Avenue in Cedar Lake.
LaPorta admitted to confronting Giordano during a burglary and stabbing the man as he tried to escape. LaPorta used toilet bowl cleaner to set the house on fire, court records state.
A month earlier, LaPorta attempted to have sexual intercourse with the minor girl in a friend's Cedar Lake home, records state.
