CEDAR LAKE — A new homeowner working on a remodeling project Sunday discovered a small explosive device used by railroads for signalling, police said.

The resident called police about 2 p.m. after finding the device in a home in the 7500 block of West 141st Place, Police Chief David Coulson said.

As a precaution, Cedar Lake police notified the Porter County Bomb Squad, which disposed of the device without incident.

Police were investigating how the device ended up in the home and if any laws were broken, Coulson said.

The new homeowner did the right thing by calling police, he said.

Anyone with information about the device or prior residents of the home is asked to contact Deputy Police Chief Carl Brittingham at 219-374-5416, ext. 118, or carl.brittingham@cedarlakein.org.
