CEDAR LAKE | The Town Council has approved a petitioner-friendly change to a town ordinance.
The council approved a Plan Commission recommendation regarding a variance expiration. Petitioners who bring a project before the Plan Commission often have to ask for a variance if the project’s parameters don’t fit into the town’s current rules or specifications.
Once the variance is granted, the petitioner formerly had 90 days to apply for a building permit. If no application was made, the variance expired.
Council action extended the grace period to one year. Town Manager Ian Nicolini said the move will benefit individuals who receive their variances at the end of the construction season and have to wait until spring to start construction.
