CEDAR LAKE | The Town Council accepted Police Chief Randall Mayersky’s resignation at Tuesday’s regular meeting and reduced his rank to lieutenant in a vote of 5-1.

A member of the Cedar Lake Police Department for 19 years, Mayersky, 47, was named chief in November 2011. His rank was reduced based on his letter of resignation, which Town Council President Randell Niemeyer refused to read into the record.

Council member Robert Carnahan voted against accepting the motion.

Deputy Chief Gerald Smith, 47, was sworn in as interim chief by Clerk-Treasurer Amy Sund.

In other business, the Town Council approved the first reading of the town’s proposed 2013 budget. No one spoke for or against the budget. The advertised budget is about $6.37 million.

“Traditionally, towns and cities advertise high because when the state of Indiana approves the budget, it could be less,” Sund told the council.

According to the budget resolution presented, the town’s tax levy is expected to be $4.22 million with a tax rate $1.37 per $100 of assessed value.

The council is scheduled to hold a second public hearing on the budget at 7 p.m. Oct. 30.

The Town Council also held a public hearing on refinancing a bond to finance a drinking water infrastructure improvement project in accordance with state and federal regulations. No one spoke during the public hearing.

Town Attorney David Austgen said the bond financing already has been been reviewed by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

The bond would be refinanced through the State Revolving Fund, which would save the town “considerable interest” during its 20-year life, Town Manager Ian Nicolini said.

No specifics on the amount could be given at the meeting, he said.
