CEDAR LAKE | Interim Chief of Police Gerard “Jerry” Smith received a round of applause Tuesday when the Cedar Lake Town Council removed the interim tag from his title.
A longtime Cedar Lake officer, Smith had been the town’s interim chief since former Police Chief Randal Majersky left the job last fall.
The Cedar Lake Metropolitan Police Commission unanimously approved Smith’s appointment as chief of police at its last meeting.
Smith, who served in the Marines, has been a police officer in Cedar Lake for more than 18 years. He also formerly served on the Cedar Lake Town Council.
After the council's vote, Smith shook hands with each council member and other town officials. He also embraced his family members, who were in the audience.
“I’d like to thank the police commission and the council for having confidence in me,” Smith said. “I was born and raised here (in Cedar Lake). I went to school here. I left for nine years to serve (in the Marine Corps) and returned to serve as a police officer.
“Now, here I am, over 18 years later, (having achieved) the top spot,” he said.
