CEDAR LAKEĀ | The Town Council has seen the new signs that will designate U.S. 41 a Purple Heart corridor.
Last month, Cedar Lake became the fifth Lake County community to declare its portion of U.S. 41 a Purple Heart Corridor. Mike Shadowen, chaplain for Chapter 721, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Hammond, presented the signs for the corridor on Tuesday along with the Junior Vice Cmdr. Don Talbot.
Schererville, St. John, Highland and MunsterĀ also have designated the portions of U.S. 41 within their borders as part of the corridor. The Purple Heart corridor commemorates all those U.S. veterans who received Purple Hearts upon being wounded during their military service. There are 226 Purple Heart recipients in Lake County alone and 40,714 military veterans.
Chapter 721 officials will install the signs in Cedar Lake at a later date, Shadowen said. The chapter welcomes Purple Heart recipients from all military branches of service and meets the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at VFW Post Hall #802, 5820 Hohman Ave., Hammond.
