CEDAR LAKE | The town has welcomed eight new reserve officers and honored the reserve commander for his service.
Clerk-Treasurer Amy Gross swore in the reserve officers, who were then given their badges. Police Chief Jerry Smith and others then recognized reserves Cmdr. James P. Keilman.
Keilman has been a reserve officer for 20 years and a part-time town employee for 30.
Smith, Town Council President Randy Niemeyer and the council honored Keilman for his years of service.
During the meeting, a presidential proclamation honoring the Volunteers in Police Service was read into the record. A plaque containing the proclamation from President Barack Obama, recognizing the 3,000-plus hours of service put in by VIPS in 2013, was also presented to the department.
