CEDAR LAKE | Town and Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission officials are hosting an open house Jan. 30 on a future green corridor.
The open house is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Town Hall and is intended to get input from residents and property owners near the corridor, said Ian Nicolini, Cedar Lake town administrator.
The corridor will stretch along waterways between Lemon Lake and Cedar Lake.
Cedar Lake, East Chicago and Portage are three pilot communities identified by NIRPC for an environmental grant program funded by the Donnelly Foundation.
NIRPC and outside consultants will supply input and guidance for developing the green corridor along Founders Creek and Cedar Creek.
The process also includes workshops with the public. Nicolini mentioned involving the Robin’s Nest homeowners association in the workshops. The Robin’s Nest subdivision is at the north end of Founders Creek.
Cedar Lake already owns a few dozen parcels directly abutting both Founders and Cedar creeks. The goal is to develop a multi-use trail along the creeks and to preserve wildlife habitat.
Cedar Creek also has been identified as a “blue way,” or water trail, by NIRPC. Other water trails include the Lake Michigan shoreline at Indiana Dunes and Deep River in Hobart.
