CEDAR LAKE | The Town Council has gotten its first look at a proposal to charge nonresidents more for ambulance calls.
The council’s Public Safety Committee hasn’t proposed specific numbers yet. During a recent study session, Clerk-Treasurer Amy Sund on the committee’s behalf presented a list of fees charged by other communities.
The committee requested a fee schedule from local communities. Five, including Dyer, Crown Point, Schererville, St. John and Tri-Creek responded. Of the five, Dyer does not have an ambulance service with its Fire Department; Dyer uses Prompt Ambulance services.
The remaining four all charge higher fees when an ambulance transport involves a nonresident.
Crown Point, for example, charged anywhere from $491.73 to $687.33 for residents. Fees for nonresidents range from $614.66 to $849.14.
Three of the five communities charge additional fees when treatment is provided at the scene but there is no ambulance transport.
St. John has separate treatment fees for residents and nonresidents. Residents are charged $100, nonresidents $150.
All six communities, including Cedar Lake, charge mileage fees. For mileage, Schererville, St. John and Tri-Creek bill residents at a higher rate.
Currently, Cedar Lake has flat fees for both residents and nonresidents. Ambulance transport ranges in price from $350 to $575. Mileage costs are $6.75 and treatment without transport is $250.
