CEDAR LAKE | A Cedar Lake man returned home from an out of town trip Sunday to find his home had been broken into and a fire set.
The rear door of the residence in the 13600 block of Cardinal Lane had been kicked in. The owner called police who found smoke and a couch fire on the lower level.
The residence incurred both structure and smoke damage. Cedar Lake Police Chief Gerald Smith said no items were taken. The incident is being investigated by his department and the Indiana state fire marshal as an attempted arson.
Smith said it appeared the fire had been smoldering for hours before being discovered. Cedar Lake Fire Chief Todd Wilkening said the fire was intentionally set. Crown Point, Lake Dalecarlia and Lowell fire departments assisted Cedar Lake in extinguishing the fire.
Anyone with information about the break-in or who saw suspicious activity in the area over the weekend should contact Cmdr. Carl Brittingham at (219) 374-5416 or the Fire Department at (219) 374-5961.
