CEDAR LAKE | The Cedar Lake Town Council has approved a contract to bring a roundabout road intersection to Cedar Lake.
The council accepted a project coordination contract with the Indiana Department of Transportation at this month's meeting. The contract releases $300,000 of federal money toward acquiring right of way for the roundabout.
Cedar Lake plans a roundabout at the intersection of Lake Shore Drive and Cline Avenue. The project will eventually involve $1.8 million in federal money, with the town itself coming up with a 20 percent match.
The project is in its earliest stages. Town Manager Ian Nicolini has received some feedback from residents who are opposed to a roundabout, he said. There is no target date for the project to begin.
A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic slows with a series of yields to allow for near-constant flow of vehicles in one direction.
