CEDAR LAKE | Cedar Lake is expected to complete its merger with the Cedar Lake Volunteer Fire Department next month.
“(The move) is historic for Cedar Lake,” attorney David Austgen said.
As part of its preparation for the merger, the Town Council heard a presentation by a potential vendor, Paramedic Billing Services.
Town officials have been discussing a contract with PBS to handle emergency medical services billing.
The decision to make what has been historically a volunteer organization into a town department was announced in September. The change was necessary to ensure public safety and the continuation of excellent residential services as the town continues to grow, Town Council President Randy Niemeyer said.
The Cedar Lake Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1942. It provides both fire protection and emergency medical services to Cedar Lake and Hanover Township.
Among other things, the department participates in activities with the Cedar Lake Boys & Girls Club and raises money for scholarships for local high school seniors.
Although some members will become town employees once the process is complete, most will remain volunteers who work on an on-call basis. The organization will still be able to raise money and engage in community activities.
