CEDAR LAKE | Cedar Lake is taking steps to make the town's volunteer fire department an official town department, Council President Randy Niemeyer said at a recent meeting.
The move is necessary to ensure public safety and the continuation of excellent residential services as the town continues to grow, he said.
The Cedar Lake Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1942. It provides both fire protection and emergency medical services to Cedar Lake and Hanover Township. The department also participates in activities with the Cedar Lake Boys & Girls Club and raises money for scholarships for local high school seniors.
Although some members will become town employees once the process is complete, most will remain volunteers who work on an on-call basis. The organization will still be able to have fundraisers and engage in community activities.
The process has already begun but is not expected to be complete until Jan. 1, said Niemeyer. He said the change was a “fresh chapter” in the history of the department and that it would help serve the community of Cedar Lake for generations.
