CEDAR LAKE | Time is winding down for a planned expansion at a BP gas station, plan commissioners said at their Wednesday study session.
“I know (they want) to have shovels in the ground (in October), but they have a way to go,” Cedar Lake Town Engineer Donald Oliphant said.
Representatives of the gas station, 13302 Wicker Avenue, want to add a state-of-the-art car wash outside and a Dunkin' Donuts franchise inside. Developer Herman Fisher has bought the parcel directly west of the gas station as part of the new plat. So as not to overtax the sewer system, the car wash will also have a water reclamation system, Fisher said at an earlier meeting.
He also plans to build a new building with a convenience store and Dunkin Donuts and add additional gas pumps. The Dunkin Donuts will have indoor and drive-through service, with minimal seating. The donuts will be baked at the Dunkin Donuts in Dyer and delivered each morning to Cedar Lake.
The BP shares an access road with McDonald’s restaurant, which has also been before the board with improvement plans. The town expects to improve access to both sites while easing traffic at the intersection of Wicker and 133rd Avenues.
Fisher is currently before the Plan Commission for preliminary plat and site plan review. Fisher’s representatives did not attend Wednesday’s meeting, but Town Manager Ian Nicolini said that they are aware of project revisions that commissioners have asked for. The commission's next meeting is Sept. 18.
