CEDAR LAKE | James L. Thorne has been named the interim superintendent of the Hanover Community School Corp.*
The board met in special session Thursday afternoon to make the appointment.
Thorne, who most recently was superintendent of the Westville Schools, replaces Richard Cook, who has been filling in on a part-time basis since late December.
The board accepted former Superintendent Carol Kaiser’s resignation Dec. 28. Kaiser had been on paid administrative leave through December, the same month Cook was appointed interim superintendent.
Cook has no school superintendent's license and has only been working three days a week.
Thorne has a school superintendent’s license and will be able to work a full-time schedule.
The board interviewed five candidates before deciding to make an offer to Thorne, Cook said. Thorne’s stint in the interim spot begins March 9.
Thorne did not attend Thursday’s meeting.
Prior to the meeting Board President Mary Joan Dickson said the board may well offer its new interim superintendent a permanent position. If the board decides to seek other candidates it will begin advertising for them beginning May 1.
Thorne served as assistant superintendent for the school City of Hobart for two years and was principal at Central Elementary School in Hobart for four. In the late 1990s, he served as a vocational marketing teacher at Hobart High School. He was also building administrator for Chesterton High School/Liberty Intermediate School in Chesterton.
