CEDAR LAKE | Shoring up the new middle school track will add another $66,000 to the project’s final price tag.
Seventy percent of the area to be used for the school track has been found to be unsuitable as a base for track surfacing, said Derek Anderson, a representative of project contractor Skillman Corp., during the Hanover Community School Corp. board meeting Tuesday.
Most of the area is clay, and “usually clay is a pretty good material,” Anderson said. “But for whatever reason this (clay) was unsuitable.” Crews had to add a base of fill to the area to prepare it for the track.
The problems with the site were discovered three to four weeks ago, Anderson said. Although soil borings were conducted on-site prior to construction, because of the costs involved, they were concentrated mostly in the area of the building and parking lots, he said.
“I’d love to have perfect soil, but you don’t know what you have until you get to it,” he said. Anderson said he would provide an itemized billing of the fill and installation to the board.
A grand opening ceremony for the new Hanover Middle School is planned for 6 p.m. Aug. 6. The ceremony is open to the public, and attendees will be able to tour the school afterward. The new school is at 10631 W 141st Ave.
